Call for artists, musicians, literary submissions and more!

Sunday, April 6th, 2008

4.jpg

The Arts Festival has announced a call for artists, musicians and more for various events and exhibits. They are currently looking for musicians and bands to perform on their Market Square stage during the festival, as well as children’s performing groups to perform during their Family Festival, which features family friendly fun and games.

The festival is also looking for artists to be a part of their “Contained” exhibit. The exhibit is being held in partnership with the Associated Artists of Pittsburgh and involves installations in a 8′ x 40′ x 8′ space. According to the festival, the work can be in any medium and represent any subject. For more information on participating in the Three Rivers Arts Festival, visit their website here.

spring-cover23.jpg

I’d also like to announce that the fourth issue of the Pittsburgh-based Debris Magazine is out! The magazine is always looking for literary and artistic submissions, so please check out the guidelines and contact info at www.debrismagazine.com. For those of you who are not writers, artists or photographers, check out the Spring issue anyways! It features all new literary talent and a very talented Portuguese painter, as well as a photographer whose goal is to travel the world and capture it all on his camera. Exciting stuff, I promise!

And lastly, I’d like to remind everyone about the Good vs. Evil photography show that will be happening at the Creative Treehouse in Bellevue on May 17th. John Bodnar is still accepting photography submissions for the event, so if you’re interested please email him at jbodnar@gmail.com. For more information, visit my previous post on the upcoming event here.

Call for Artists/Photographers!

Tuesday, March 11th, 2008

paint2.jpg

The Academy of the South Side is putting out a call for artists and there is a call for photographers that I’d like to mention too.

The Academy of the South Side is doing a “Citywide Salon” as part of the Pittsburgh 250 celebrations. The Citywide Salon will be a month long showcase of local art, with up to 20 artists’ work being displayed in bus kiosks around the city. Sounds like a neat idea! The deadline for submissions is March 28th, so without delay, straight from their website is more information:

The mission of The Academy is to be a resource for painting and drawing, and for CITYWIDE SALON we are seeking artists to submit up to 5 works to be selected by a panel of judges for this highly visible month-long showcase. While there is no specific theme that will unify the selections, preference will be given to representational work. CITYWIDE SALON will be a celebration of artists from all over the Pittsburgh region, and we specifically encourage artists representing the neighborhoods of South Side, Oakland, Shadyside, Bloomfield, Lawrenceville, the Strip District, and Downtown to submit, as those are the neighborhoods we will target for the locations of the bus panels.

We ask that artists submit a Jpeg, TIFF, or PDF image of their work no later than March 28th, 2008. The jury process will take place in April, and the selected artists will be announced in the middle of the month. After the announcement, the selected artists will be responsible for submitting a high-resolution image of their work. Exact printing specifications for the panels can be found below. Please keep in mind the vertical orientation of the panels, as well as the final layout proportion of approximately 7.2 inches high by 5 inches wide. We will have 2 templates that will be used for the bus panels: one that places the text and sponsoring organizations’ logos as a header and footer to the ad, and one that incorporates these elements into the composition, allowing for a larger image. Artists are encouraged to submit a very brief description of themselves (3 - 5 words, e.g. “South Side Oil Painter”), as well as a website and/or contact information for inclusion on the panels. It is worth noting that large black areas tend to not retain their proper color due to light shining through the poster.

On Saturday, July 19, we will hold a finale event at the Brew House where artists will have an opportunity to display their original submission. Artists will also be able to keep the poster that is used in the bus kiosk for future promotional efforts. This is a great opportunity for artists to get widespread exposure throughout the city, participate in an exciting show, and to keep a large poster of their work for future promotional efforts and to commemorate their involvement in CITYWIDE SALON and Pittsburgh 250!

For more information, visit the Academy’s website here.

Another neat idea is John Bodnar’s Good vs. Evil photography show that will be held at the Creative Treehouse on May 17th.

All participants for this event will have to choose a side to represent. Photographs can be in any subject matter, whether you choose to work with images in religion, morality, ethics, elements….your representation of the side you pick!

There is a lot of room with this to be highly creative and experimental in your works.

If interested in participating, please email John at jbodnar@gmail.com.

Good luck everybody!

Also please check out my magazine’s new featured content. You will not be disappointed and I think everyone needs to see Jennifer Maria’s photos of Florida after the weather we’ve been having here. Go here to see my previous post.

Art DIY-style!

Monday, January 7th, 2008

artdiy.jpg

I declare 2008 the year of creativity, as a personal goal for myself and hopefully for the city as a whole. There have been so many attempts in the past year to publicize and push forward the local arts scene and I really think excellent progress is going to be made this year.

Last year we had Jesse Hambley’s Creative Treehouse kick off, which is a shared creative space, as well as a common meeting place for like-minded individuals and a really nice place to have events, like art shows and art tutorials. Last year there were numerous shows, including two Creative Marathons where participants had twenty-four hours to create a work of art and present it in the show the following day, as well as two Doughnuts and Arts and some other art and photography shows. The Treehouse is located only 5 miles from Downtown Pittsburgh in Bellevue, so it’s a convenient place to commute to as well.

Then there was the launch of the Pittsburgh Galleries website, which is a comprehensive listing of art shows, as well as local artists and photographers.

This year I was alerted to the presence of a new project/collective called the Factory Artists and Factory Photographers, which is gathering local talent in an effort to promote them nationally and to get Pittsburgh on more than a local arts scene. They will be debuting their work and progress in an art show in April of this year at the Rex Theater, which is definitely going to be exciting.

Also, Fun a Day has started in the month of January for Pittsburgh, which in case you’re not aware of, is an attempt to beat the winter blahs by creating something every day in January and then showing everyone’s efforts in an art show in February. The idea originated in Philadelphia and projects have included everything from a photo a day to a poem a day and everything in between. I will definitely post more details about the show when it gets closer. In the meantime, despite it being seven days into the project, you can hurry and catch up and join if you’re interested. A link will be posted below.

And lastly, Zombo Gallery is opening up its gallery to anyone interested in hanging up their own work for a special show that will debut January 12th between 5:30-11pm. Each artist is allowed to bring two pieces of art and must arrive between 5-7:30pm to hang it up, obviously space permitting. For more details, it’s best to call this number 330-806-7813.

Factory Artists: www.myspace.com/factoryartists
Factory Photographers: www.myspace.com/burkephotography
Fun a Day: http://funadaypgh.blogspot.com/
Zombo Gallery: www.myspace.com/rockabilly_circus

Even if you don’t have enough time to do the Fun a Day, I think it would be a really neat idea if everyone tried to incorporate art into their lives a little bit more…whether it’s creating your own or just visiting an art show and supporting the local arts scene. Pittsburgh really needs it and it’s not like we don’t have the talent to back it up!

I would love to see more local talent in my literary/art magazine, Debris…if you’re interested please contact me! Visit my previous post for further details or visit the website here.

The Creative Treehouse’s Benefit for Big Brothers, Big Sisters Event

toy-drive-flyer.jpg

Just in case you can’t read the print:

On Saturday, December 8th, the members of the Creative TreeHouse in Bellevue will put their talents to good use and hold a benefit for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Pittsburgh. Professional holiday portraits will be taken at the Creative Treehouse, located at 517 Lincoln Ave (2nd Floor) Bellevue, PA 15202 from 10:00AM to 8:00PM for those who bring a toy donation for Big Brothers Big Sisters. Suggested donations are toys for boys and girls up to age thirteen and around the price range of $10. Family portraits are available for a donation of two gifts, one for a boy and one for a girl. Single portraits will be available for a donation of one gift. A holiday backdrop designed by Creative TreeHouse members will be available as will a normal studio backdrop for single and family portraits. The whole family is invited to spend time at the Creative TreeHouse while portraits are being taken. Portraits will be available to download online with a special code provided to each guest at the event.

Six different photographers will be shooting the portraits all day and if you’d like to see a sneak preview of some holiday photos, visit the Treehouse’s website here. This is a great event for a great cause and I encourage all of you to stop out on Saturday before or after the I Made It! event. I guarantee it will be way more fun than shopping at the mall all day.

Sticking with the holiday theme of this post, I’d like to say that books are a great gift idea, although it’s not easy to pick the right one. So I’d like to suggest for the global warming denier in your life, why don’t you check out Prof. Holly Fretwell’s book The Sky’s Not Falling: Why It’s Ok to Chill about Global Warming. The Fiction Scribe blog has interviewed the writer and you can check out what she has to say here.

Children of October and the Shutouts are both quoted saying, “We wouldn’t want to miss this event for anything!”

24 Hour Comics Day Invades Pittsburgh

Friday, October 19th, 2007

24-hr-comic-marathon.jpg

What: 24 Hour Comics
Where: Creative TreeHouse, 517 Lincoln Blvd., 2nd floor, Bellevue, PA 15202
When: Saturday, October 20th, starting at 9am to 9am Sunday
Cost: FREE to attend, BYOB (food, drink and supplies)

Bellevue, PA, — On October 20th, 2007, cartoonists around the world will face the 24 hour comics challenge of trying to create a 24 page comic story in 24 straight hours. To help these cartoonists, some comic book stores, educational institutions, libraries, businesses, and comics clubs will host special 24 Hour Comics Day events. They’ll provide cartoonists with a space to work, access to food and drink, and camaraderie. This year Creative TreeHouse will be hosting the 24 Hour Comics Day on October 20th from 9 am to Sunday 9 am to help bring Pittsburgh cartoonists and illustrators together.

The cartoonist’s goal on the annual 24 Hour Comics Day is easy to explain, difficult to achieve. Each wants to turn 24 blank pieces of paper into a finished comic book in 24 hours. This “24 hour comics challenge” means achieving what might normally be months of work in a single (generally sleepless) day. During last year’s event, more than 1200 cartoonists gathered at event locations in 17 countries, working side-by-side while sharing energy, snacks, and camaraderie. While not everyone successfully completed 24 pages, among them they crafted more than 15,000 pages of comics.

At the end of the 24 hours the participants will submit a scan of their comics to the national 24 Hour Comics organization. To encourage safe travels after the 24 hours, participants will be required to have alternative transportation via bus, pick ups or walking. For complete rules and history, please visit http://www.24hourcomics.com. Please RSVP to info@creativetreehousepgh.com, but walk ins will be welcome.

Also check out this post you’re in to haunted attractions in Pittsburgh. It might be something fun you could do after your done at the 24 Hour Comics!

The Haunted TreeHouse

Tuesday, October 9th, 2007

treehouse.jpgThe Creative Treehouse in Bellevue, PA is planning a Halloween event for November 3rd called The Haunted Treehouse. The venue is known to have creative events like the 24 Hour Creative Marathon and this event is no different.

Since it is a Halloween themed event there is going to be a Pumpkin carving contest and a Gothic art sale. The details of the event are still being planned out, so make sure you keep checking the Creative Treehouse’s website for more details as they become available.

I am on the planning team for the event and they put me in charge of finding bands and artists. I am looking for bands that have a horror kind of feel to them. A Misfits cover band would also be a good time. As for artists, I think Gothic or Horror art would be very appropriate. If you feel your band or artwork fits the theme, send me an email at jmosley[at]MrBaconpants[dot-com}.

Also if you’re going to be attending the event, start thinking of costume ideas. There will be a discount in the cover fee for all that wear one. Also there will be prizes for the Pumpkin carving contest. If you would like to donate a prize contact Jesse of the Creative Treehouse.

Just in case your reading this and don’t know what the Treehouse is, it’s a creative co-working studio that offers shared creative space, a meeting/event spot, and creative services to the Pittsburgh, PA area.

Two other events that are happenening at the Treehouse this month are:
- 10/20 - 10/21: 9am to 9am - 24 Hour Comic. For a full description of this event please click here.
- 10/27 - La Roche Environmental Awareness Show. More details coming soon.

Bacon at the Creative Marathon

Tuesday, October 2nd, 2007

If you remembered awhile ago I posted about the 24 Hour Creative Marathon at the Creative Treehouse in Bellevue. Well I would just like to let everyone know it was a great time. I created art, met new people, ate lots of pizza, and drank enough caffeine to kill a small child. You can view all the pictures taken at the event here.

Just in case you don’t remember what the Creative Marathon is here is a quick recap. The Creative Marathon is a two part event beginning with a 24 hour artistic marathon that culminates in a gallery show the following day. Beginning Friday, September 28th, at 8pm, artists had 24 hours to create a piece of work pertaining to the theme “Lost and Found”. At 8pm the very next evening, the Creative Treehouse featured the works in a gallery show, along with food, drinks and live music. You can found out more about the event at 24hourcreativemarathon.com!

Mosleys Artwork
This is the artwork I created during the event. I used colored ink, acrylic, and water color. I also scratched in a tree into the wood. In certain lighting it’s hidden, but if you look at it long enough you will find it.

Since my blog MrBaconpants.com sponsored the event, I thought that I would cook up some bacon Saturday morning. It was a big hit.

Mosley Cooks Bacon
Me, a world class bacon chef. Everyone told me that they enjoyed waking up to the sweet smell of bacon. It was a good way to start off the day.

The gallery show after the marathon was a lot of fun too. It was a BYOB event with live music. The artwork was for sale and a lot of it sold, which was good for the Treehouse since it gets a percentage of the sales. The bands at the event were diverse, it went from nerd rock to blues with a little folk in the middle.

This was my view on the event, Emily also attended the event and said that she will be posting her views on it sometime this week.

Tonight! + Weekend Reminders

Friday, September 28th, 2007

Make sure you head out to the Pub tonight to check out some really great bands, which I can sincerely say each one is equally good and you won’t be disappointed. And yes, I’m biased since I’m friends with most of them, but still! And I have to add that the Main Events are the best joke band Pittsburgh has had to offer for a long time. They’re a lot of fun!
l_2ef775bd2219ac913a9cf60d5dd0bc77.jpg

Also, don’t forget about the I Made It craft show Saturday from 12-5 at the Brewhouse (check my previous post for details), or the Janus Film Festival, which ends this weekend (again, see my previous post for more info).

And then Saturday evening, head out to Bellevue to check out the results from the 24 Hr Creative Marathon, which is also going to be a great time. And I’m not just saying that because Buddy Nutt will be performing, who if you don’t already know who he is, shame on you.

Regardless of the music being performed, the art is definitely worth checking out. The last Creative Marathon was quite successful and a lot of work ended up being sold. I’m definitely going to bring some money with me this time.

24 Hour Creative Marathon

I plan on making it out to all the above mentioned events, so it’s going to be a busy weekend as usual; expensive if I buy artwork and crafts, but fun. Can’t wait!

I was part of this the last time they had it and I ended up selling most of the art I created there. It was a lot of fun to get the chance to hangout and create with fellow artists. If you are into art, you have to come out to this. I hope to see you all there!
