It’s already the final weekend of the Arts Festival, so I thought I’d highlight some of the events being held today and tomorrow.

Saturday, June 21
-Pittsburgh Playworks: Professionally staged readings of plays by Pittsburgh playwrights; 1pm at 937 Liberty Avenue

-Pittsburgh Rocks! Battle of the Bands @ the Market Square stage from 2-5pm
-Dreams of Hope: a gay/straight performing arts group @ the Community Stage, 5:15
-Mystic Knights and Alejandro Escovedo closing out the night at the Main Stage, 5pm and 6pm

Come check out all of the amazing artwork and goods for sale in the artists market, as well as the exhibits located around downtown. I recommend visiting the Contained exhibit on Forbes Avenue by Market Square, especially the Zen Room, which was a peaceful way to spend my day volunteering at the Festival.

I also wanted to mention the Barack Obama bake sale at Zombo Gallery in Lawrenceville that’s taking place tomorrow from noon-4pm. Zombo will be djing and the proceeds will go to moveon.org’s Obama presidential fund.

While you’re there, you can also check out their Attack of the Pittsburgh Tattoo Artists exhibit, where Pittsburgh’s finest tattoo artists have displayed their wildest works of art. Objects include skateboards, paintings, sculptures and more. The show closes on June 29th, so hurry this is the perfect opportunity to see it while it lasts!

It’s already the second week of the festival, so I figured now is as good as time as any to talk about this great event. The festival is still being held downtown around the Gateway Plaza/PPG Plaza/Market Square area and runs until June 22nd. Here’s just some of the highlights of this weekend’s events:

I’ve been volunteering at the festival since last week and I can say that so far, there’s been a really good turnout, great artists and some amazing music, so come on out!

Phipps Conservatory’s May Market is this weekend!

Shop for various garden plants and gardening tools, as well special green items, like eco-pots made from recycled grain husks. There will also be local experts on hand to answer all of your gardening questions and a special presentation by nationally syndicated gardening expert, Joe Lamp’l. If you are interested in listening to Lamp’l speak, you should rsvp for the talk by calling 412-441-4442 x 3803. There is no charge for the presentation or any other event taking place at the May Market.

The event takes place all weekend at Phipps Garden Center:

Also going on this weekend is the 52nd annual Pittsburgh Folk Festival!

Join in on a multi-cultural celebration this weekend at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center. There will be more than 30 nationalities represented in the form of ethnic entertainment, food, shopping and more.

Festival hours are as follows:
Friday: 4pm-10pm
Saturday: 12-10pm
Sunday: 12-6pm

Tickets purchased in advance are $8 for adults (13 and over), children (4-12) and free for children under 4. Tickets purchased at the door cost an extra $2 for adults only.

For those of you not local to or frequent visitors of Oakland, now is your chance to further explore this great little area of Pittsburgh.

This Saturday come out to experience A Taste of Oakland; for only $5 you can tour more than 20 businesses, as well as sample local food and refreshments.

Participating restaurants include Dave and Andy’s, Hemingway’s, Mad Mex, Spice Cafe, Starbucks and more! There is also free parking at the UPMC lot on Meyran, free entry into the Carnegie Museum and free carousel rides in Schenley Plaza. You can also receive $5 off any performance of Pittsburgh Irish and Classical Theatre’s production of an Ideal Husband or Wilde Tales.

The event takes place from 12-3pm Saturday and tickets can be purchased that day at Eureka Bank at 3455 Forbes and the Public Parklet at the corner of Forbes and S. Bouquet.

Also on Saturday is the Good vs. Evil photography show at the Creative Treehouse.

The photography show will feature the work of local photographers each depicting one end of the broad spectrum of good and evil representations. There will photos for sale, as well as food and entertainment all for $5. The show is 18+ due to subject matter and will be hosted at the Creative Treehouse in Bellevue.

Hideous Kinky Part Deux: A Speak Easy Cabaret is happening this Saturday at the Grey Box Theater in Lawrenceville. The event will feature music and dancing of course!

Hideous Kinky is hosted by the Zafira Dance Company, a combined belly dancing, contemporary and ethnic style dance troupe, which won the coveted Troupe of the Year 2007 award given by Zaghareet Magazine. The troupe will be performing, as well as Mira Betz of Barbary Coast Shakedown, West African Dance Sensations Balafon, Midge Cricket, as well as the combined musical talents of Buddy Nutt and Ukulady as Ukulucky.

According to their website, Zafira is donating a portion of the proceeds to V-Day, an organization that brings the issue of violence against women and girls front and center in the culture and the community. On April 12th, V-day is hosting in New Orleans,- V TO THE TENTH - featuring international performances of The Vagina Monologues, musical guests, V-Day activists from across the globe including Kenya, Afghanistan, Iraq, The Philippines, Democratic Republic of Congo, Eastern Europe , men standing up for women and much more.

The show begins at 8pm with doors opening at 7:30pm. Tickets cost $10 in advance and $15 at the door. Tickets can be purchased via the Zafira Dance Company’s website here. The Grey Box Theater is located at 3595 Butler Street in Lawrenceville and can be reached at 412-586-7744.

In addition to this event, Zafira Dance Company offers belly dancing classes around the Pittsburgh area at Breathe Yoga Studio in the South Side, Body Empowered in Bellevue and Bodiography Dance Studio in Squirrel Hill. I suggest checking out the schedule on their website to see available classes, times, locations, etc.

Also going on this night is 412 Tag and the “Hips, Rum and Rock and Roll” exhibit. Check out my previous posts for more information.

412 Tag takes place at the Elks Lodge in Braddock this Saturday starting at 9pm and finishing up around 3am.

The venue features a stocked bar with drink specials, a kitchen that will cook food as late as you can eat it, and has its own parking lot around back to save you the hassle of parking.

The Braddock Police Department will be providing an off-duty officer to ensure everyone has a safe, drama-free time.

The event is 18+ and is only $5. The Braddock Elks Lodge is located at 424 Library Road in Braddock.

412 Tag will also be collecting monetary donations for a local animal shelter, Animal Protectors in New Kensington. Animal Protectors is a no-kill, non-profit shelter located in New Kensington, PA. Their shelter is always full of animals, many which are strays. Their shelter is a constant stream of activity. New animals are examined for possible problems, medical charts are checked and medication is administered, when needed. Cat cages and dog kennels are cleaned daily. From the time the shelter opens until it closes, there’s a constant flurry of cleaning, feeding, exercising, cuddling, caring. Fresh food, water, litter boxes, and blankets are placed in each cage daily.

Just wanted to let everybody know that the Wee Beasties exhibit at Zombo is closing this Saturday. Nathan Mazur’s exhibit features over three dozen miniature paintings of various insects, worms and creepy (I say cute), bugs. What makes this event even more fun is the discounted pricing of the remaining beasties after 8pm. There’s also going to be music by the Jim Dandies so definitely check this out!

The closing reception begins at 6pm, with music at 8pm. The Wee Beasties exhibit is located in Lawrenceville at the Zombo Gallery, 4900 Hatfield Street.

If you’re not able to make the event, make sure you check out Mazur’s website to view the bugs anyways.

I also wanted to let everyone know who didn’t, that the Brillobox has Drink and Draw drawing sessions every other Tuesday, with one occurring tomorrow.

Drink and Draw is a live model drawing session, which meets on the second floor of Brillobox at 6pm and runs until 9pm. There is a $10 session fee, but it’s worth it with the various themes the models dress in for the session. According to their Myspace, Drink and Draw is a relaxed, inspiring atmosphere and I’m pretty sure you don’t have to be an expert artist to attend.

And for those of you who may get hungry during the session, downstairs has their Starving Artist Tuesdays with grilled cheese and tomato soup for only $2. Yum. If I didn’t work, I’d go just for that!

I Made It! is having its first evening affair this Friday called the I Made It Fashionable, which will be a combo of a fashion and craft show, as well as featuring local dance and music acts. Sounds like a good time!

The event is being held at the Brew House in the South Side, which if you went to the craft show the last time it was there, you’ll know where you’re headed. If not, it’s on Mary Street by 21st Street. Doors open at 7:30 with the fashion show starting at 8pm. Following the fashion show will be performances by Jazzercize Troop Radical Pittsburgh and DJ J. Malls of The Big Throw Back.

The show is being sponsored by Sugar Boutique, Jet Boy Jet Girl, Jupe Boutique, Philip Pelusi in the South Hills, Penn Brewery, the music and dance acts and the Brew House Association.

Admission is $5 and you must be 21 to drink. I always find really neat stuff at their craft show, so I definitely plan on going!

Also going on this weekend is David Hare’s Vertical hour at the Pittsburgh Playhouse. Now I’m not just promoting this play, because I graduated from Point Park but because it looks really interesting.

Here’s the summary straight from the REP’s website:

Hot off its successful international Broadway debut, The Vertical Hour is Hare’s contemporary story drawn right from today’s headlines. An impassioned debate between a former American female war correspondent turned Yale professor and her boyfriend’s British father ensues over the American management (or mismanagement) of the Iraq War and international relations. Funny, poignant, and at times disturbing, the encounter takes an unanticipated turn as the discussion ignites a dangerous attraction between the two, revealing the stark revelation that each is in flight from their own lives.

Showtimes are 8pm Thursday-Saturday, as well as a 2pm showing on Saturday and Sunday.
Tickets run between $24-27, with a discount given to Point Park students, which I strongly suggest taking advantage of!

Tonight at Belvedere’s is the fifth annual Galactic AssDragon Classic, a battle of electronic music with the winner coming out with a 7 inch single pressed by the No Room for Talent label. There will be a panel of judges judging a wide variety of electronic sounds, from the screeching to the heart stopping bass coming out of anything from labtops to microphones to anything else the entrants have thought up.

Speaking of which, this year’s performers include Deepwinter, Statas, Mike and Ike Jones, Vasculator, Cockmongler, Doverspike and more! Be prepared for crazy stints by Mike and Ike and dead baby props by Doverspike.

The event starts at 9 and only costs $3 for a whole night’s worth of crazy entertainment. This really is a one of its kind event; trust me I know from last year. One word of advice, you may want to bring ear plugs!

Belvedere’s is located at 4016 Butler Street in Lawrenceville.

Also, this weekend is the South Side’s Mid-Winter Soup Contest presented by Iron and Glass Bank. The event is Saturday from 12-3pm and is a wonderful way to sample local soups and provide food for the needy for months.

A $5 donation and a can of soup will get you a map of the South Side and all of the participating restaurants, where you can sample soups galore.

I should also remind everyone that tonight is the 15th annual Guinness Toast, so all of you Guinness lovers should be excited about this one! There are too many participating bars to possibly list them all, but some of my favorites who will be toasting include, 1311 in the S. Side, Bloomfield Bridge Tavern, Buckhead Saloon in Station Square, Caseys, Fatheads and Smokin’ Joes also in the S. Side and the Do Drop Inn if you’re out in my hometown, Natrona Heights. If you’re interested, I suggest visiting your favorite bar’s website (if they have one) and see if they are participating and if not, drink your Guinness anyways. Who needs an event to do that?!

Unity Night @ Church Brew Works

Unity Night: A Celebration & Fundraiser to Fight the Allegheny County Drink Tax, is tonight at the Church Brew Works in Lawrenceville. 100% of all the proceeds will be used to finance activities seeking to repeal the 10% Allegheny County Drink Tax, so if this is something you’d like to support, please do!

The event is from 5:30 to 9:30pm and costs $40 per person. Admission includes craft-brewed beers from Pittsburgh Regional Breweries and food provided by local chefs. There will also be local entertainment and a silent auction.

Tickets can be purchased by phone or in person at the Church Brew Works or at the Priory Hotel in the North Side. They can also be purchased online through Penn Brewery’s website here. Ticket holders must be 21 and over.

Prospectus I: Humongulous @ the Brew House

Although you can’t check out this gallery show tonight, maybe you can later on this week! The first Prospectus of the 2007-2008 gallery season, includes works by Maria Mangano, Jairan Sadeghi, and Charlie Wright and focuses on the subject of identity.

Here is some info on the artists, straight from the Brew House’s site:

Maria Mangano is a native of Syracuse, New York. She earned her BFA from Carnegie Mellon University and lives and works in Pittsburgh. Her work is influenced by the natural world and its manifestations in museums, art, and academia.

Jairan Sadeghi earned her BFA from Carnegie Mellon University. She has exhibited at SPACE Gallery, Space 101 at the Brew House, and Modern Formations Gallery.

Charlie Wright is a freelance illustrator and designer living in Pittsburgh. He is originally from Oakland, California and came to Pennsylvania to attend Carnegie Mellon’s BFA program.

While you’re there, you can also check out an exhibition of works by Julius Houser in the Special Projects Gallery. The exhibition is presented in conjunction with the Independent Living Initiative, a program which assists youths who have gone through the Allegheny County Office of Children, Youth and Families. The program provides services, such as housing, mentoring and post-secondary planning.

Pittsburgh celebrates it semiquincentennial in November, but all year there are events planned to increase awareness of Pittsburgh’s awesomeness and reasons to visit our fine city.

There have even been plays and operas written to celebrate this occasion, including Second City’s Three Rivers Run Through It! and Squonk Opera’s Pittsburgh: The Opera.

Second City’s Three Rivers Run Through It! runs from January 8-13th, so catch it before it ends! It’s playing at Pittsburgh’s Public Theater on Penn Avenue in the Cultural District.

The Public Theater’s website describes the play: “Created especially for Pittsburgh Public Theater in celebration of the city’s 250th Birthday, comes a brand-new, laugh-out-loud-funny sketch & improv show from the phenomenal Second City. Picture Big Ben meeting Kenny Kangaroo for pierogies in Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood and you know what we’re talking about. If you love Pittsburgh and you love comedy, this is the show for you. Come and live it up!”

Pittsburgh: The Opera is returning due to popular demand and will probably sell out like last year, so buy those tickets as soon as you can if you’re planning on going!

For those of you not in the know, Moondog’s is a bar, as well as a place to see live acts in Blawnox, which is only a short drive from downtown off of route 28.

For the past 18 years they have been featuring numerous live acts, including local, national and international musicians in all genres, although they are best known for their blues bands.

To see who has played at Moondog’s, all you need to do is go there and look up towards the ceiling and see all the signed photographs and I guarantee you will be pleasantly surprised.

The bar is rather on the small side, but there is plenty of room and plenty of nice people. I’m always amazed at the great talent that is ‘hiding’ out in this place.

Moondog’s has also expanded their event nights to a Myspace Monday and a hip-hop night. The Myspace Mondays are nights where amateurs can take the stage, usually in the form of acoustic guitar and the like. Definitely something to check out if you’re sick of the same old stuff. And of course, the hip-hop night is self-explanatory and they’re been getting a really good turnout, so that’s something to check out as well.
